Liz... Image Guidance

Elizabeth, D.Min., Ph.D., teaches Religious Studies at DePaul University where she serves as a chaplain. In addition, she is a spirituality resource beyond the university, not only offering seminars, retreats, workshops and individual sessions on imagery and healing, but also writing books and articles on a variety of related topics. This work has taken her throughout Chicago, across the United States and as far away as South Africa where she was a presenter at the 1999 Parliament of the World's Religions; it includes keynote addresses at conferences; inservices for school faculties, hospital staffs and corporations; retreats for women's groups, parishes, professional groups and wellness groups; training of therapists and medical practitioners in imagery and healing; individual consultation.

"Liz" as she is known by her friends, would like you to know about her work in Image Guidance, a counseling technique she developed for use in healing physical, emotional and spiritual problems; this involves dialoguing with one's own spontaneous images while in an altered state of consciousness so as to understand the roots of particular conditions, how to alleviate symptoms, manage pain, move beyond anger and denial, and find healing. Using deep breathing exercises and relaxation techniques, Liz helps clients confront their particular issues head on; after an image has surfaced which captures the heart of the problem, she uses her intuition and knowledge of myths and symbols to guide the imaginative dialogue that follows.

Basically, clients get to ask questions regarding the problems they are facing and their images, reflecting the inner wisdom that is already there, usually provide answers. Since developing this technique, Liz has helped countless clients understand and often move beyond such conditions as depression, panic attacks, feelings of inadequacy and powerlessness, addictions, eating disorders, stage fright, fear of public speaking, chronic conditions such as diabetes, and a host of psychosomatic disorders. She has also trained therapists and medical professionals in Image Guidance, often serving as a private consultant when conventional medicine fails to provide solutions.

Liz is especially gifted at understanding how certain conditions are related to stress, grief, lack of fulfillment and spiritual struggles; she believes in the healing power of the imagination and is comfortable working with people of all faiths or no faith tradition at all. She accepts people "where they are" and does not impose her beliefs on those who seek help; as she explains in her books Image Guidance: A Tool for Spiritual Direction and Image Guidance and Healing (Paulist Press 1992 and 1994), however, she acknowledges that her gift of healing is "God-given."

A member of Spiritual Directors International, Liz sees private clients by appointment at The Madison Centre for Spirituality & the Arts,
1043 West Madison Street, Chicago, Il 60607 (312-738-3370; her website is www.themadisoncentre.org
